What Are Edible Oils?
Bringing a consumer to understand how edible oils are refined, we must first examine what edible oils are. There are many kinds of edible oils. Edible oils are liquid substances used in commercial and industrialized processes. Edible oils can be found as common household items, sometimes in kitchens and other industrial situations. The way edible oils are made up are products from plants, animals, and microbial fat, and are safe for human consumption. Common forms of edible oils are:
- Cannabidiol
- Olive Oil
- Sunflower Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Canola Oil
- Peanut Oil
How Are Edible Oils Refined?
When oil is processed it is originally crude oil and must be refined into an edible oil. This process of refining of edible oils can be broken down into a few different processes:
- Degumming
- Neutralization
- Dewaxing
- Deodorizing
- Mitigation
The refining process can be a mix of all those different steps depending upon whether it is physically being refined or chemically being refined to edible oil. The refining process includes neutralizing fatty acids, removal of phospholipids, and filtering out particles.
What Solvents Are Used for Refining Edible Oils?
Normally the universal solvent of water is used in the refining process, but other chemicals are used as well. The main chemical solvent used in refining edible oils is in fact Hexane! Hexane is the most used solvent in refining edible oils and can be applied to many other refining processes as well.
