What Is Hemp Used For?
Hemp is an excellent option for industrial purposes because of its versatility, ability to decrease deforestation and the ability to clean the earth soil. Our planet has many environmental concerns that can be easily fixed with hemp made products and extractions.
Over ten thousand years ago, hemp was one of the first plants to make usable fiber. Hemp can be made into many different items that we mass produce and use regularly. Hemp can be made into:
- Fuel
- Food
- Plastics
- Paper Products
- Building Materials
- Ink
- Shoes
- Diapers
- Flour
- Skin Cream
- Medicine
- Cotton
Think about these items and how many of us use them daily. How many of these items do you think impact the environmental concerns for us today? All these products produced at high quantities have a negative impact to the earth. Let us look at plastics. Majority of plastic items will take over 1,000 years to decompose in the earths soil. Hemp plastics only takes 3 to 6 months to fully decompose. Not only will it decompose faster but it can be recycled indefinitely. Imagine having a biodegradable hemp water bottle and being able to recycle it over and over. Or how quickly it would decompose in the soil, reducing plastic pollution.
Hemp As A Substitute For Cotton
Hemp is a great substitute for cotton and is even ten times sturdier. Cotton cultivation requires consistent high temperatures, a substantial number of pesticides and a lot of water to keep plants healthy. Hemp has its own natural defense from pests, requires less water and can grow in almost any environment. Instead of cutting down more trees for paper products and building materials, hemp proves to be more beneficial. According to the Hemp Foundation, “The U.S. Department of agriculture derived that one acre of hemp cultivation produces four times the amount of paper than one acre of trees.” Switching back to hemp-based products would dramatically reduce deforestation.
Chernobyl and Hemp
Radioactive soil in Chernobyl, Ukraine is successfully being treated and repaired by growing hemp along with mustard plants. Scientists in Chernobyl reported that the two types of plants are removing heavy metals and toxins from the soil. Hemp plants store these toxins in the stalks and leaves. Hemp being able to remove and absorb this very harmful substance is another supporting reason to encourage hemp cultivation and hemp made products.
