Methods of Botanical Oil Extraction
Botanical oils are oils that are derived from plants. They may originate from a plant’s seed, stem, leaves, flowers, or roots. These oils are often employed for their beauty benefits, as they can exhibit moisturizing, healing, anti-aging, and any number of other helpful properties.
There are a wide variety of botanical oil extraction methods. Read on to learn about three of the most common techniques.
- Cold Ethanol Extraction
This type of botanical oil extraction involves mixing plant matter with ethanol, freezing the mixture for an extended period, filtering the resulting solution, and using a rotary evaporator to boil off the excess ethanol and leave the botanical oil behind. Ethanol is just one example of a solvent- other solvents, such as methanol or butanol, can also be used.
- Steam Distillation
In steam distillation, plant matter is steamed, and then the steam is cooled until it becomes liquid. The desired oil is collected from the surface of the recondensed liquid. Steam distillation is a fairly specialized method of botanical oil extraction, as it is generally used to extract essential oils.
- Supercritical CO2 Extraction
This method of botanical oil extraction takes advantage of carbon dioxide’s supercritical point- that is, the point when it displays characteristics of both liquids and gases. Plant matter is passed through a succession of flasks, resulting in a highly refined extract in the final flask. Supercritical CO2 extraction is often employed to extract certain compounds from cannabis.
